Are you the poet or wordsmith who will inspire the people of  Llandrindod Wells to describe their town?

We are looking for a Poet /wordsmith to work alongside a visual artist for a community project run by Celf o Gwmpas, Tremont Road, Llandrindod Wells, Powys LD1 5EB

Project date: Spring 2021 Application deadline: 30th January 2021

Celf o Gwmpas is a well-established visual arts organisation based in Llandrindod Wells. We work with the local community and especially people traditionally excluded, such as people with learning disabilities and older people needing support.

We have funding to run a project which will involve participants working with a visual artist and a poet over a series of three consecutive days. They will spend time walking around the town looking up, above the eye-line, to notice Llandrindod's Victorian and Edwardian architecture. This will create the basis for art works to be developed.

The artist, poet, Celf o Gwmpas staff and any participants who want to, will select images from the visual art and pair them with words to create a series of images which will be printed as posters to be displayed around the town, for use on appropriate web-sites and social media accounts as well as postcards - each participant to have some for themselves as well as being freely available, the town will be encouraged to send postcards to contacts far and wide, to spread images of our town's architecture. We will have an exhibition of the art work produced in our Gallery at Centre Celf and virtually on our website.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a poet who has experience of working within communities and creating work through collaborations. They need to be comfortable initiating conversations in the community, with the groups and the general public out and about in the town. The aim is to gather words, stories and reflections on the newly noticed architecture. These words will provide the basis to create poems, wordscapes and visual poetry. This is an ‘out there’ role.

• You will have experience of working collaboratively with other artists or groups.

• You will be able to show your ability to talk comfortably with a wide range of people, putting them at ease, communicating the purpose of the conversation and gaining their agreement to use their words.

• You will be able to collect and curate the words of others, using your abilities to select particular words and phrases, create links and sometimes add to imagery without diminishing the words of others. This is essentially a collaborative role.

• Welsh is desirable.

The project will take place in the spring of 2021. This is obviously dependent on the current pandemic situation. The plan is for all activity to take place outside and we are hopeful that by then some restrictions will be lifted. We may have to change the delivery date but will work to find a suitable date for everyone.

How to apply

Please submit the following information to [email protected] by midnight on 30th January 2021:

• An up-to-date CV

• A brief letter of application that broadly outlines why you are interested in this opportunity and how your experience and qualities would make you suitable, this is especially important if you haven’t undertaken any similar work previously.

• Examples of your work and a brief outline of any similar work you have undertaken. For example, working to a commissioned brief, producing similar work, with contact details of people we can approach for a reference with regard to this work.

• Two referees that can testify to your suitability to undertake the contract.

Closing date: 30th January 2021

Shortlisting: Week commencing 1st February 2021

Shortlisted people will be informed by email and invited to interview by 8th February 2021

Interviews: potentially on-line, 16th February 2021

£1282.50 in total. There is also a £20.00 per day subsistence, plus travel costs which will be agreed in advance of the project starting.

More about Llandrindod Wells

Llandrindod Wells is a town that was largely built in Victorian and Edwardian times - it was a spa boom town created in the middle of a large rural area and is unlike other mid-Wales towns where buildings are historically largely stone built. There are many interesting buildings, windows, roof-lines, lettering etc that are largely unseen because most of us do not look up and notice the world above our heads.

Llandrindod Wells is emerging from a period of being thought of as dead town; there are an increasing number of community events and collective activities. We would like to bring our arts-focus alongside these initiatives to encourage people to see andappreciate more the physical characteristics of the town and to enrich their experience of living there. As we all learn how to create a life alongside COVID we feel that this project will help strengthen the growing community connections and support, adding an appreciation of the build environment.

Mwy am Landrindod

Mae Llandrindod yn dref a godwyd i raddau helaeth yn yr oes Fictoraidd ac Edwardaidd - roedd yn dref ffyniant sba wedi ei chreu ynghanol ardal wledig fawr acmae'n wahanol i drefi eraill yng nghanolbarth Cymru lle mae adeiladau’n hanesyddolwedi'u hadeiladu o gerrig i raddau helaeth. Mae yna nifer o adeiladau diddorol, ffenestri, llinellau to, llythrennau ac ati sydd heb eu gweld i raddau helaeth oherwyddnad yw'r mwyafrif ohonom yn edrych i fyny ac yn sylwi ar y byd uwch ein pennau.

Daw Llandrindod i’r amlwg o gyfnod o gael ei ystyried fel tref farw; mae nifer gynyddol o ddigwyddiadau cymunedol a gweithgareddau ar y cyd. Hoffwn ddod â'n ffocws celfyddydol ochr yn ochr â'r mentrau hyn i annog pobl i weld a gwerthfawrogimwy o nodweddion corfforol y dref ac i gyfoethogi eu profiad o fyw yno.

Wrth i ni oll ddysgu sut mae creu bywyd ochr yn ochr â COVID, rydym yn teimlo y bydd y prosiect hwn yn cryfhau cysylltiadau a chefnogaeth gymunedol sy’n tyfu, ganychwanegu gwerthfawrogiad o’r amgylchedd adeiladol.
